Rebuild and install Paxman 12YJ engine

Challenge:

A Paxman 12YJ engine, which is used to drive a fire pump, suffered a catastrophic failure during a regular test on the oil platform.  A piston seized causing the connecting rod to snap and smash through the side of the crankcase.  A serious error had occurred during a previous refit of the engine by another vendor.  The engineer had incorrectly fitted the connecting rod assemblies resulting in insufficient oil reaching the top of the pistons.  The operation of the platform was limited as the safety matrix did not allow certain tasks as one of the fire pumps was now offline.  Below you will see the damage caused to the engine.

How we helped:

  • Sourced and rebuilt a fully reconditioned replacment engine.
  • Provided complete document pack including Lloyds test certificate of the crankshaft, along with other measurement and test sheets.
  • Arranged delivery from our workshop to Aberdeen, including craneage and bespoke lifting frame.
  • Installed the engine into the 'module' on the oil platform using Bartech engineers.
  • Fully tested and commissioned the engine in situ to the satisfaction of the client.
  • Complete dismantle and inspection of damaged engine to diagnosis cause of failure, report was sent to the client.
  • All documentation and documentary images made available via our customer portal so can be viewed by all parties
  • Develop and improve monitoring processes.
